Best Wines for Seafood Dinner — Sommelier Picks

Seafood loves bright, dry whites with salinity. My workhorses: an Albarino from Rias Baixas for shellfish and salt, a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc like Giesen for oysters and light fish, La Scolca Gavi for scallops and anything buttered. All on the list. Chill hard, pour cold.

Questions people ask

What wine pairs with oysters?

A bone-dry, high-acid white — a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc or an Albarino from Rias Baixas is the move. A traditional-method sparkling like Cava or Champagne also works beautifully. Avoid anything oaked or sweet with oysters; you'll bury the brine.

What wine goes with salmon?

Salmon is fatty enough to handle a Pinot Noir, especially grilled or seared. Otherwise a lightly oaked Chardonnay or a dry rosé from Provence is perfect. Salmon is the seafood exception where red is genuinely on the table.

What about sushi?

Dry Riesling like Chateau Ste Michelle Eroica, off-dry if there's spice, or a good sparkling like Cava. Sake is the honest answer, but if it's wine night, stay crisp, low-alcohol, aromatic. Skip anything big or oaky — it fights the delicacy of the fish.
