Best Wines for a Party — Real Sommelier Picks

Party wine has one job: nobody complains. My picks — a Rioja Crianza for red, a Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Gris for white, a good Spanish Cava for bubbles. Buy them by the case. All on my list, all under $20, all designed to disappear from the table.

Questions people ask

How much wine do I need for a party?

Plan half a bottle per adult for a two-hour party, three-quarters of a bottle for a full evening. Split roughly 60% red and white to 40% sparkling if you're doing all three. Always round up — leftover wine is not a problem.

What's a safe wine for a party where I don't know people's taste?

A juicy Rioja Crianza for red, a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc for white, and a bottle of Cava. That combination covers everyone. All three are under $20, all three drink well chilled or room temp, and none of them are polarizing.

Should I serve expensive wine at a party?

No. At a party with more than six people, the bottle is background — nobody's tasting carefully. Buy good $12-$18 wines by the case instead of a few $40 bottles. Save the expensive stuff for dinner with two friends who'll actually notice.
